About the Northwest Mountain School: The Northwest Mountain School is owned and operated by IFMGA guides John & Olivia Race.  We have been in business continuously since 1994. Our program in the Pacific Northwest operates in Leavenworth, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Glacier Peak, North Cascades National Park, Exit 38, Mt. Rainier National Park, Fun Rocks and Goat Wall in Mazama, and on Mt. Adams.  This is very much a small, family-run, operation but we are one of the busier guide services in the Pacific Northwest.  NMS employes some of the top guides in the business.  John & Olivia have extensive expedition guiding experience and have guided for a combined 39 years.  We have also worked for some of the larger guide operations in the US and have a general sense of how those operations function.  We are sponsored by Patagonia, Petzl, Sportiva, & Cilogear. Olivia is a member of the AMGA instructor pool, and John is a former AMGA Board Member.

Compensation: Intern will be provided with a monthly stipend to cover some basic living expenses.  You will receive guide uniform from Patagonia, and will be able to participate on a variety of NMS rock climbing and mountaineering programs throughout the summer.  The programs will not count as part of your weekly hourly commitment, but are encouraged to give you the chance to see how the logistics side of the business relates to field operations.  This is also an opportunity to shadow a wide variety of guides to get a sense of different guide's strengths. You can place pro orders with a variety of companies during the summer months.  We can also organize a place for you to live on the grounds of a local river rafting operation.  Accommodations are spartan, but social!

Who are we looking for?: We are looking for someone that has an interest in climbing on their own time and has an interest in guiding.  You need to be organized, service oriented, and motivated to work hard in an often unsupervised capacity.  Must be willing to work with us to deliver the product that we are offering, which are well-run, well-planned climbing trips.  Our past 2 interns were both male, but we are also excited to have female applicants!

How to apply: Contact Olivia Race by e-mail.  Include a resume with any experience related to the jobs you will be doing.  Give us a sense of your educational goals (in college?, working on AMGA training?), and let us know if you can be here for the duration of the internship.  Feel free to call us at 509-548-5823 to discuss by phone.  We are at the start of our busy season, so phone calls will not be interviews, but an opportunity to ask a few questions.
